“Home is not a place, it’s a feeling.”
It’s written on the wall above a window that looks out onto the bustling street at Homie in Manhattan Beach, a beautiful upscale seaside community in the South Bay of LA. This coffee shop/wine bar/cafe is my latest conquest to adventure everywhere with wine, coffee, or food (so basically everywhere) in Los Angeles.
They’re playing The 1975 in true Indie cafe fashion as I walk in the door, at just the right level of volume for people to hear each other speak if they’re engaged in a conversation or work on their laptops using the cafe’s free WiFi. The space is open and airy, and flooded with light from the large window taking up most of the wall on the front entrance and the open garage-door walls. The place is decorated to feel like you’re well- right at home (But like, a nicer and cleaner version of home that serves you Verve coffee without you having to make it for yourself). It’s even dog friendly!!
Even the ladies bathroom is decorated with unique art hand-selected art. In fact, every corner of this “homie” cafe screams “made with love,” to me including my cafe au lait. The workers were friendly and accommodating and the place clearly aims to offer a space of community. They most definitely succeed in my opinion offering an atmosphere of collective contentment present all around.
Cafe owner Kelley Bailey Haley has lived in Manhattan Beach her whole life, and wanted to create a space for community which represents the small town vibe of the place which has always been her home. The restaurant has no walk-in freezer to store food long term, so ingredients must be freshly sourced every day including fare from local farmers markets, meat from Manhattan Meats, and bread from Breadbar in El Segundo.
The cafe also has a retail shop in the back with merch created by local artisans, like jewelry, clothing, original artwork, home decorations, and more.
I’m so glad I got to spend a sunny Summer Friday afternoon feeling right at home, at Homie in Manhattan Beach.
When you visit for a bite to eat or a drink at the cafe, be sure to take the opportunity to wander a few streets down to the ocean and check out the Manhattan Beach Pier to soak up the surfer vibes and enjoy the quintessential California experience.
Homie Manhattan Beach is located at 1140 Highland Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266. The shop is open Mon – Thu:7:00 am – 6:00 pm and Fri – Sun:7:00 am – 7:00 pm.
