Anything less just wouldn’t be Proper
“Anything less just wouldn’t be Proper.” That’s what you think as you walk through the doors of this incredibly hip architectural design marvel. It’s located in the heart of San Francisco, and it’s called the San Francisco Proper Hotel.
Immediately when you walk in, you’ll notice the classic art adorning the walls painted in soft but strong colors. It’s said that “pattern and color are king at the Proper,” which is 100% true. Bright florals, embellished rugs, and plush pillows mix with the depth offered by the dozens of mirrors adorning the walls. There’s an eclectic gathering of paintings tastefully covering each of the walls in a perfectly well-orchestrated graphic sequence.

This dog-friendly (that’s an important detail) flagship Proper property is housed in a historic 1909 flatiron landmark style building. There’s a captivating interior designed by none other than the talented mastermind Kelly Wearstler herself.
This property hosts three inspired settings for food or a cocktail, as well as incredible rooftop views and fabulous service and amenities. It’s an ideal destination for a staycation or a vacation in the City by the Bay.
On-site, you’ll discover dining selections from Eater SF’s “Restaurant of the Year.” There’s a classy rotating selection of culinary programming to entertain locals and visitors alike, like “high tea” downstairs at Villon’s.
You’ll indulge in a cocktail with the finest of views of the city. This is accompanied by a dining menu helmed by Michelin-star rated chef Jason Fox. There’s also more than 7,500 square feet of meetings & event spaces.
Charmaine’s

First, let’s talk about the famed Charmaine’s. After ascending high up in an elevator 120 feet above Market Street, you’ll burst into this bustling rooftop bar and lounge space. It’s an atmosphere that San Francisco has been waiting for, and an ideal hangout spot.
Vibes feel like “Cool meets hot” (literally — the San Francisco temperatures are quite unpredictable) and the word “elevated” is the word to describe the feeling you’ll get when you’re on this rooftop overlooking the city skyline.
The restaurant pairs drinks with an all-day menu of bites created by Executive Chef Jason Fox. BVHospitality curates the cocktails, showcasing the vibrant flavors for which this dynamic libations duo is well-acclaimed.

During my visit, I most enjoyed the fire pits. They’re a cozy respite from the chaos of city life below, and the upstairs decor is modern and elegant.
Villon’s

Step into this downstairs bar to feel as if you’re stepping into an old fashioned, golden age speakeasy meets tea party scenario.
The bright colors mix with the sleek metallic furnishings to create a depth of curiosity I hadn’t yet encountered in any hotel bar before — but that’s just it. The SF Proper is no ordinary hotel and it doesn’t do anything halfway — this property goes all in.
The Rooms

There are 131 rooms and suites at the SF Proper, each maximizing as much light and city views as they can.
Each room features the luxurious amenities of a Proper hotel. This includes Aireloom beds that are handmade in California and fitted with Italian bed linens, Aesop bath and body products, high-quality Vifa wireless speakers (and of course, a gorgeous and eclectic design).
Each of the walls in my room had a different pattern. You might think it would be overwhelming — but it was just the opposite. It felt like this contrast added character.
And the bed was seriously comfortable. I fell asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow and stayed asleep the whole night.
There was even a generous mini-bar hiding tucked away in a chic closet in the wall. The speakers looked like something out of a movie. Very swanky.

Overall, I’d say this hotel is a fantastic destination if you’d like to find a spot to properly pamper yourself in the City by the Bay.
This artfully designed masterpiece of architecture combines the friendly service you seek with all the amenities you’d need to feel like royalty for getaway.
From the lovely rooms, to the tasty bites and the impressive libation / rooftop view combination, it’s somewhere I’d spend a weekend and never leave the hotel.
