The Suite Life: JD House, Mendocino, CA

Part of the Blue Door Group collection, the elegant, seaside bed and breakfast property JD House is the nearest to the sea of the three Blue Door Group inn properties of Mendocino. This cozy inn features lush, flowery English gardens, a large deck, and best of all — fabulous views of the Mendocino coast.

Blue Door Inns is just one of the elegant and sophisticated Four Sisters Collection hospitality properties, which comprises of three distinct, boutique B&Bs. Each of the inns are located all in the heart of this quintessential seaside village. Whether you’re visiting Blue Door Inn, JD House or Packard House, your stay will be wonderful. Between these three inns, there are 19 rooms to set as a home base for exploring California’s rugged North Coast.

Each of the Blue Door Inns are an easy walk to downtown Mendocino village with restaurants, shops and the spectacular Mendocino Headlands which hosts numerous cliff-side trails and views of the Pacific Ocean.

The inn we stayed at, JD House, is modeled as a modern interpretation of a ship captain’s home and hosts sweeping sea views (even if it’s NOT a clear day…), alongside a colorful English garden, and eight charming rooms (most of which have sizable balconies for sipping coffee or wine and soaking in the sights of the Pacific Coast).

It can be the perfect destination choice for those who are seeking a romantic, calming, and low-stress overnight experience in Mendocino.

Holiday Highlights

Perk #1: Each morning there’s a complimentary hot breakfast basket which is hand-delivered directly to your room…

Perk #2: Upon check-in, as with each of the Four Sisters properties, you’ll be treated to a curated wine and cheese basket to enjoy with your spectacular view (and in my fortunate case, a fireplace!).

Things to Know

You’ll be checking in at the Blue Door Inn building, which is located just down the street less than 1/2 mile from the JD House building. Each of the Blue Door Inn collection of three properties are scattered around the village and are fantastic choices to spend a night, but JD House is no doubt my favorite for its unparalleled ocean views!

As unique as this check-in process is from some of the other properties I’ve stayed at in the past, it was actually quite nice to have this privacy and self-sufficiency. We just grabbed the key at Blue Door Inn and headed over to our respective B&B location without having to interact with anyone else the rest of our stay.

Our Room

We spent the night in the Grand View King room at JD House, which really lived up to its name… it was certainly “Grand.” Even though we were fighting some classic June gloom during our stay, it was still an incredibly peacefully beautiful way to spend a night away from the chaos of urban life.

What I especially appreciated about JD House is the amazing location and its walkability of the village. You can seriously walk to get anything you’d need — from the market, to the local coffee shop, to dinner and down to the coast for a stroll along the ocean. Once you park your car (and it’s easy, free street parking) you likely won’t need it for the remainder of your stay.

Overall, I’d say JD House is a historic but modern, cozy B&B that creates an atmosphere of comfort and privacy for a relaxing vacation. Read more about the most up-to-date information on the property on their website, here.
